Chapter Thirty-Eight

Lau Sector

Bridge, NECS Reliant

The Reliant's weapons roared to life as the ship threw a torrent of fire at the lead scavenger. Some of the fire pelted harmlessly off the debris, but most of the ordinance found its mark. The scavenger lit up as dozens of small explosions erupted on its hull.

"Move the ship closer, I want to keep the bastards from doing their little trick," Wellard said.

The trick Wellard referred to was the maneuver the scavengers had done when they’d first encountered them at Gibraltar Station. Their usual method of attack was to send one scavenger at a ship while the others remained behind. While the first ship took a pounding, the other five could pelt the target with ease. As the damage to the first ship intensified, it would pull back and allow another to take the hits in its place. In this way, the group of smaller ships could act like it had the punch of one much larger.

Against a ship the size of the Endeavor, the tactic could allow the smaller vessels to take out the larger ship. Against a heavy cruiser like the Reliant, the tactic didn't stand a chance.

But that was out in the open where the only cover the ships had was the other ships. Out here in the massive debris field, there were many places to hide. Places a much larger ship like the Reliant couldn't risk going unless they were willing to do significant damage to the hull.

As the Reliant closed the gap, the explosions intensified. Dozens of smaller explosions were replaced by smaller amounts of large ones as more of the fire found its mark. But as in their previous encounters, one of the other ships moved in to protect the near-critical ship.

If they were in the Endeavor, Wellard would've cursed their luck, but instead, he smiled. If they were stupid enough to jump into the firepower the Reliant could dish out, they deserved everything they got.

Within a matter of moments, the combined might of the gauss cannons and laser fire tore into the second ship. The next scavenger in line rocketed forward, trying to put itself into the Reliant's line of fire. They were nearly there when the second ship exploded. The hull seemed to implode momentarily before the force of the blast propelled everything outward, pelting the new arrival.

One of the larger pieces caught the third scavenger in the bow, sending the ship off course enough to expose its belly to the Reliant. Weapons crews wasted no time targeting the weaker section of the ship. Within moments, it too, buckled under the sustained assault.

A sudden blast rocked the Reliant, sending the crew reeling and Wellard into the wall then onto the floor. "What the hell hit us?" he barked as he pushed himself back to his feet.

"Sensors are picking up multiple locks." Ritter pulled up the results of the scan and placed them on the main viewscreen.

"Looks like those ships aren't as dead as we thought," Bremerton mused.

"Indeed." Wellard strode back to his station and strapped in.
